The big cities have been seeing a rise in the popularity of travel during the 4th of July. According to the travel booking site Priceline, big cities are expected to get more traffic on the Independence Day weekend this year, thanks to the holidaying folks.

The Change in Scene

According to the chief product officer of Priceline, Kevin Heery, big cities are making a grand return as the most popular choice of a weekend getaway – replacing coastal and beach destinations of the last two years. On the 4th of July this year, travelers are getting more excited to go back to major metros like New York, Las Vegas, Chicago, etc. to experience the entertainment, dining, and cultural scenes those cities have to offer.

Per the Priceline data, Las Vegas will be the most sought-after destination for the 4th of July holiday weekend this year. It’s also one of the most affordable locations with hotel room rents averaging $172 per night only. It’s followed by New Orleans with hotel rooms a bit pricier, at an average rate of $390 per night. The no. 3 spot on the list is taken by Orlando, which has been one of the most popular summer getaways, in general, thanks to its plethora of freshwater lakes and theme parks. On this holiday weekend, the average rate of hotel rooms in Orlando will be $213 per night. Other major cities such as New York and Chicago are next in popularity with average hotel room rates of $263 and $249 per night, respectively. As for the most affordable travel destination, Priceline suggests heading to Dallas this 4th of July where an average nightly hotel room rate is just $133.
