Australia’s First Underwater Hotel Takes Luxury Travel to the Next Level

In the last few years, news of the Great Barrier Reef has been more the result of concern than awe. But finally, there is a new and much happier reason to be talking about it. The first-ever underwater hotel in Australia opened its door on the Great Barrier Reef in December 2019. There, you can be immersed in what looks like a reversed aquarium and wake up to a stunning view of the reef.

Reefsuites, the name of the new underwater accommodation, is hosted on a floating pontoon just off the coast of the Hard Reef. The two deluxe suites that can be booked onboard are suspended below sea level and give you the chance to observe over a 1,500 water species from the comfort of a king-size bed.

On the board of the floating hotel, you can experience the reef in more ways than one. There is a training pool for snorkeling and scuba diving under the pontoon, where you can enjoy spectacular views as a beginner too. At night, you can doze off to the relaxing view of the marine life seen through the full-height windows.

The Current State of the Reef

There are still many things that pose a threat to the Great Barrier Reef in one way or another. Decreases in new coral and coral bleaching have been occurring at alarming rates. The deterioration of the reef has placed it under the protection of UNESCO, which stated its “concern” for the reef’s condition.

How Sustainable Is an Underwater Hotel?

Some may be asking themselves if an establishment like Reefsuites adds to the environmental impact of humans on the biodiversity and health of the reef. According to marine biologists, the increased interest of tourists has a certain level of impact on the environment, but the economic benefits outweigh it. The local authorities still have a significant say in how the reef is used for tourism and monitors all such activities.
