New York City is a bustling and thriving destination and a city to live in. People know how to work hard but they are very good at finding ways to get out of the daily grind when they need to. Usually, for a relaxing weekend getaway, they leave the city behind and go to some of the picturesque little towns and areas nearby. If you want to go where New Yorkers go, consider the places below.
Providence, Rhode Island

Providence is one of these places that can easily trick you into thinking you are in a fairytale town. With a charming small-town vibe and cobblestone streets where you can wander around for hours, Providence is a breath of fresh air for all your senses. It’s just about three hours away by car and it is full of things to do. In the evenings from mid- May to late November, you can enjoy a fire show in the river. The event is called WaterFire and it lights up Downcity Providence. During the day, you can go for a walk around the 102-acre Roger Williams Park in the middle of the city.
Boston, Massachusetts

Boston doesn’t really need an introduction but it is a less popular destination for weekend trips. Perhaps it is because it offers New Yorkers the well-known experience of a big city or the fact that it’s a bit further away (getting there by car takes between four and a half and five hours normally). Yet, Boston is worth the visit even if it is just for a weekend. A Boston itinerary would be incomplete without a stroll around the Boston Public Garden and lunch at Back Bay. Don’t forget to check out the monthly event program for some of the many festivals taking place here all year long.
Long Beach Island, New Jersey

Less than two hours away by car from New York City, Long Beach Island is a preferred getaway for many, especially in the summer. It has a bit for everyone so if you are with kids, you won’t be out of places to eat, see, and experience. For a fun family trip, you can go to Fantasy Island, an amusement park in the Southern part of the strip, that offers a rare and warm vintage experience. Whether you decide to spend your weekend with your toes buried in the beach sand or you’d rather hit the many food and drink joints, you will have a lovely time away from the city.
