Spetses is likely one of those Greek islands that you’ve never heard of. With no airport and around two hours by boat from the port of Piraeus, it’s also not the easiest place in the world to get to. However, if you’re willing to put in that little bit of extra effort then it will certainly pay off. This is why you need to visit the little island of Spetses.

The Dapia
As soon as your boat pulls into the Dapia, you’ll all of a sudden feel right at home. It’s the first thing you’ll see of the island, with its patterned cobbles and horse and carts. Step off your boat and into what feels like another world, unspoiled by much of the tourism that some Greek islands are prone to.

The People
This is the kind of island where the locals will welcome you with open arms – probably because it hasn’t been spoiled by tourism! Once you’re off the boat, head to one of the cafes that overlooks the Dapia and get yourself an iced coffee. You’ll be greeted with warm smiles by both the serving staff and any locals sitting at tables, playing with their worry beads.

The Island Itself
Spetses is a fairly small island, with limited numbers of cars allowed (other than some owned by hotels). You can easily rent yourself a quad bike or moped and make your way around the entire island in no time at all. Stop off at all the beaches dotted around Spetses, taking in the smell of pine trees that gave the island its name.

Old And New
One of the most amazing things about Spetses is how it mixes the old with the new. Some parts of the island have seen redevelopment, particularly when it comes to jaw-dropping mansions dotted around. You’ll also find some modern and chic places to eat and drink, that make the whole island feel very cosmopolitan. However, in between these more upmarket places, you’ll find all of the charm of Greek tavernas and even a sports bar named Socrates, where the owners will welcome you as if you’re part of their family.
Sure, it may take a little while to get there, but actually that’s a good thing. If Spetses was easy to get to, then it’d probably be filled with tourists. Especially when they realize how stunning this little island really is.
