Alaska is famous for many things, but for the most part, it’s known as the ultimate destination for adventurers. Many people spend their lives dreaming of this beautiful state with its untouched forests, its epic hiking trails, the cold temperatures, and the sense of achievement they will feel when they make it from their home to this final destination.
Into The Wild
One of the reasons why Alaska is so popular with adventurers is because of Christopher McCandless. Also known as ‘Alexander Supertramp,’ this man left his home in the early ‘90s in search of a better life in this state. He wanted to rid himself of money and modern existence and went on a mission to walk and hitchhike his way from Georgia right into the Alaskan bush. His story was the subject of the hugely famous book and movie, Into the Wild.
The Famous Bus
Although McCandless eventually made his way to Alaska, he found this basic life a struggle – especially in the harsh Alaskan conditions. He eventually stumbled across an abandoned Fairbanks Bus, which he used as his shelter and his home for 114 days before he sadly passed away from starvation. Since his story was made public, many people have gone on their own Into the Wild pilgrimage to see this bus for themselves and retrace Supertramp’s steps.
A Real Danger
Much like McCandless, though, these explorers soon realize that their mission isn’t going to be easy. In recent years, many people have found themselves succumbing to the cold conditions, the quick weather changes, and the swollen rivers that make up this journey. Because of this, the local government has decided to remove the bus for the safety of everyone who attempts to find it. At the moment, it’s not known where its new home will be.
So, those looking to embark on their own wild adventure may have to wait a while.
